Una compilation shoegaze.
Revolution – The Shoegaze Revival è il titolo di una compilation in download gratuito che ospita 30 gruppi provenienti da 16 paesi e cinque continenti (niente crampongaze antartica, purtroppo), curata da un’etichetta inglese e una indonesiana. L’elenco completo è riportato più sotto ed è davvero stupefacente, specie se si considera che lo shoegaze è un genere di solito considerato solo britannico e che non assoceremmo mai, tanto per fare un esempio, a Indonesia, Brasile o Pakistan. E nemmeno riusciremmo mai a immaginarlo cantato in italiano, portoghese o giapponese. Invece, ecco che Revolution propone tutto questo e lo fa anche in modo estremamente gradevole. Inevitabilmente vengono evocate le atmosfere fra rumore e visionarietà tipiche dei My Bloody Valentine (che ancora funzionano alla grande) o di altri maestri del settore quali Slowdive, Swervedriver e Ride (tutti e tre, a quanto pare, in procinto di riunirsi), tuttavia i gruppi presenti in Revolution hanno saputo creare una serie di apprezzabili variazioni al classico canone shoegaze.
Si va dunque dal fosco (Blood Lips, Damascus, Slow Motion Picture) al trasognato (Weird, //orangenoise, Hideous Towns), dal favolistico (Stella Diana, The Evening Primrose) al bucolico (Digilite, Intenna), dallo psichedelico (Wozniak, Puna, Jaguwar) a una forma canzone suadente e articolata (Ummagma, Thud), dall’elettronica (Sounds Of Sputnik feat. Ummagma, Robsongs, Magao) al dream pop (Rev Rev Rev, Trementina, Spool, Lights That Change), dal post punk arioso (Clustersun, Sharesprings, The Yours, Seaside, Ether Feels) a quello più noise (Duelectrum, Stellarscope, Hermetic Delight). E l’ascolto scorre benissimo, anche se una divisione in due parti è consigliabile.
Un’ultima considerazione: in un mondo sempre più fobico dove tutti cercano di erigere barriere e creare confini (e poi li difendono con le guerre), le chitarre senza confini di Revolution viaggiano da oriente a occidente, e viceversa, senza incontrare né creare ostacoli e senza nemmeno lanciare slogan, semplicemente suonando. Con una piccola modifica al titolo di un album del jazzista Albert Ayler, potremmo dire che Shoegaze Is The Healing Force Of The Universe.

Revolution – The Shoegaze Revival is the name of a free download compilation featuring 30 bands from 16 countries and five continents (alas, no crampongaze from Antarctica). The idea in itself is quite stunning, assuming that shoegaze is considered a very British kind of sound, a sound that we wouldn’t normally connect to countries like Indonesia, Brazil and Pakistan. Neither we would imagine to hear it sung in Italian, Portuguese or Japanese, but here it is and the result is really pleasant to the ears, too.
Of course, you’ll find here the dreamy noises that bring to mind bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Swervedriver and Ride, but also a lot of personal touches: from grim (Blood Lips, Damascus, Slow Motion Picture) to reveric (Weird, //orangenoise, Hideous Towns), from fairy (Stella Diana, The Evening Primrose) to bucolic (Digilite, Intenna), from psychedelic (Wozniak, Puna, Jaguwar) to decidedly song-oriented (Ummagma, Thud), from electronica (Sounds Of Sputnik feat. Ummagma, Robsongs, Magao) to dream pop (Rev Rev Rev, Trementina, Spool, Lights That Change), from a fluid post punk (Clustersun, Sharesprings, The Yours, Seaside, Ether Feels) to a more noise-oriented version of it (Duelectrum, Stellarscope, Hermetic Delight).
One last thought: in a world that gets more phobic day by bay and where everybody seems only interested in building new borders (and defend them with weapons), the guitars without frontiers of Revolution travel from West to East and back without finding (or building) walls and also without sloganizing. They do it just with their sounds and chords. Changing just a word in the title of a famous album by jazz artist Albert Ayler, we could say that Shoegaze is The Healing Force Of The Universe.
