Classifica: I migliori album del 2016

I “Top Tom” (ma anche i “Flop Tom”) del 2016

E’ stato un anno triste per la musica. Si potrebbe quasi dire che si è aperto con la morte di David Bowie e si è chiuso con quella di Leonard Cohen. I dischi di entrambi questi artisti, fra i migliori dell’anno non soltanto per Tomtomrock, annunciavano in un certo senso la loro scomparsa; sono dischi che parlano esplicitamente della morte, ma non in modo deprimente: la qualità elevatissima di entrambi sublima anche la morte, trasformandola in arte. Il video di Lazarus, il nostro preferito del 2016, lo dimostra senza ombra di dubbio.

In modo particolare per Blackstar, non per niente scelto come disco dell’anno, l’audacia delle scelte musicali ha riportato Bowie all’avanguardia della musica contemporanea, proprio nel momento in cui ci ha lasciati. Nonostante questo, anche la qualità melodica delle composizioni lo mette davanti a tutti: Dollar Days, struggente ballata, si classifica infatti come canzone dell’anno. Quanto a You Want It Darker, difficile che un addio alla vita sia altrettanto poetico e consolatorio.

L’annus horribilis della musica è in realtà ricco di ottimi dischi: la nostra classifica 2016

Altri dischi che qui vengono promossi in alto nelle classifiche hanno un rapporto con il dolore e la morte: Skeleton Tree di Nick Cave certamente; We Got It From Here… di A Tribe Called Quest è forse il disco migliore di una band che non ne incideva da anni, ma esce all’indomani della morte di uno dei membri: Phife Dagw. Certamente con il dolore e la morte ha molto a che fare anche The Hope Six Demolition Project di PJ Harvey, il nostro secondo classificato: dopo il magnifico Let England Shake, PJ continua a riflettere sulla condizione contemporanea del mondo e sul tema della guerra come nessun altro sembra in grado di fare. E la musica resta sublime.

Nella classifica dei migliori album 2016 non ci sono solo addii e malinconia

Iggy Pop per fortuna sta bene, nonostante gli acciacchi dell’età ha anzi fornito alcuni live spettacolari. Rinvigorito dalla presenza di Josh Homme & Co. ha anche dato al 2016 un disco bellissimo, come non ne realizzava dagli anni ’70 quando ad aiutarlo era David Bowie. Fra i veterani vanno almeno ricordati anche i Madness, che sorprendono ancora con uno stile che è ormai un classico della musica inglese.

Non ci sono però, e per fortuna, soltanto i veterani. Sono rockstar affermate ma giovani Alex Turner e Miles Kane che firmano un nuovo eccellente disco come The Last Shadow Puppets.

Come lo scorso anno, la classifica di Tomtomrock premia generi differenti. Kendrick Lamar ha un talento infinito: persino un disco di outtakes finisce fra i primi in classifica. E poi abbiamo la conferma di Frank Ocean, con un disco meno immediato di Channel Orange ma non meno importante. L’astro nascente di Anderson .Paak, che tiene viva la tradizione soul sia pure contaminata da nuovi linguaggi: hip-hop in testa. Hip-hop che è ormai, appunto, un linguaggio più che un genere: una fra le personalità più interessanti della nuova scena inglese, la poetessa Kate Tempest, lo sceglie infatti per musicare le sue composizioni. Senza dimenticare James Blake, che dalla commistione di generi differenti ne ha creato ormai uno tutto suo.

Un discorso particolare sui migliori dischi dell’Italia 2016

Abbiamo preferito parlare di dischi “usciti in Italia” invece che “italiani” perché c’è una forte differenza tra quelli che guardano al panorama internazionale, come Stella Diana e Teho Teardo (con o senza Blixa), e quelli che invece cantano in italiano e sono legati alla scena locale. Forse bisognerebbe pensare a una doppia classifica, ma per quest’anno li segnaliamo ancora insieme.

Ma Tomtomrock guarda al di là della musica italiana e anglofona. Come prova l’inclusione fra i primi posti del nuovo, particolare e coinvolgente Benjamin Biolay.

Piccole ristampe contro la crisi: le migliori del 2016

I cofanetti costano e i tempi sono difficili. Per tale ragione  qui proponiamo una lista di belle uscite dal formato ‘normale’ (un massimo di 3 cd solo per i Big Star) e dal costo accettabile.
