Mick Harvey Intervista

Mick Harvey Intervista

mick harvey - delirium tremens

Fino a ora hai inciso otto solo album extraordinairies.

A long interview with Mick Harvey, an Australian artist whose CV is stunning to say the least: The Birthday Party, Crime & The City Solution and, of course, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with whom he stayed for 25 years. He has recorded eight solo album, four of which are dedicated to Serge Gainsbourg’s songs. The third volume of the Gainsbourg opus, Delirium Tremens, came out a few months ago; the fourth, Intoxicated Women, will be released at the beginning of 2017.

How’s the state of the music in your country? Are there interesting new names?
There are always new and interesting things happening. Lots of interesting singers and probably some good bands too. Whenever I’m asked to list such things I can never bring anyone to mind.

I ask you  this because you’ve produced great artists as Robert Forster, PJ Harvey, Anita Lane, Mazgani.  I think you have a good flair on understanding the right voices and talents.
Well, indeed. I did an album recently with Jess Ribeiro. She’s fantastic. I don’t do a lot of production work but maybe the things I do become involved with are notable because the artists are usually great.

Delirium Tremens is one of the best records of 2016 so far, full of great intuitions.
I’m glad you like it.

How did you record it?
It was recorded in the old fashioned style – live in the studio with a core band. But this was done in two different locations. Me with a band in Melbourne and with a duo in Berlin. Actually that was like a band
sometimes too when Yoyo Röhm joined us.

Did you have a “theme” in mind?
I was just working through my list of songs and chose the ones which I felt would work with the different musicians in each location.

What is the “meaning” of this record?
What does it mean to me? It’s another album of songs which can be enjoyed in their own right. There is no particular or specific meaning. Unlike my last 2 solo albums which were very much personal statements on specific themes. This album and the imminent Intoxicated Women are collections of quite disparate songs.

You worked for several years with Nick Cave in The Bad Seeds. Could you tell me about this experience?
Obviously we began playing in a band together when we were teenagers. Until late Birthday Party era we were never close collaborators – there was always some other “right hand man” and I was just contributing my arrangemental skills, whatever they are, and helping with production etc.

From around ’82 to the mid-90s I found myself in a principle collaborative role, one which I had never planned to be inhabiting but things just developed into that condition. I certainly learnt a lot about all manner of aspects of music and arrangement in that time. From the mid-90s things changed gradually as the Bad Seeds settled into a coherent and consistent line-up and Warren Ellis gradually came more and more to prominence in tandem with Nick. For me that was fine – I had never really been interested in co-writing songs or whatever.

Over time the balance changed and eventually it became preferable for me to focus on other things. Our communication broke down a bit on the last tour in 2008 and it seemed ridiculous to persist with something that was no longer as good as it had been for 30 years.

May I ask you what do you think of Skeleton Tree, the new Nick Cave album? Have you heard it?
Yes, I like the album. It’s obviously something he needed to do in the aftermath of his son’s death and I think it’s very brave and very moving. I can’t even begin to understand how hard it must have been to go through that experience and how odd it must have been to work on this album.

Tell me about your experiences as a soundtrack composer…
I have quite mixed experiences with this. The times I have worked with directors who are friends of mine the experience has been usually excellent – when the communication is good and the collaboration is working. I find myself less and less interested to work on films, to be honest. Maybe I’m just not in the right zone to be doing that at the moment. It may come back to me.

So far you have recorded eight solo albums extraordinairies. You seem able to skip from one record to another “en plein liberté” …
I suppose my official solo career began with the 2 Gainsbourg albums but for me they are a unique and somehow separate project. The same goes for Volumes 3 & 4. In between I made 4 solo albums which are probably more indicative of my personal taste. In some ways they are quite low-key. None of them are big production numbers but they contain very powerful songs and support repeated listening. They are much more indicative of my personal tastes and state of mind.

The illicit use of drugs …
Is ancient history. Most people I was working with had these problems and it damaged everyone who was in contact with it but they and I have moved on.
