mick harvey intervista pt. 2

Sei d’accordo?

SS C’est Bon: grande traduzione, intelligente, elevata.

The Man With The Cabbage Head fa pensare a Mark Lanegan, un musicista che tu, a quanto so, apprezzi molto …

Coffee Colour è solare e dalle atmosfere latine e quasi mediterranee.
Hmm, forse. Ma non parlerei di atmosfere mediterranee. Le definirei caraibiche.

The Decadence è grande poesia.
Vorrei esserlo.

Boomerang, A Day Like Any Other, A Violent Poison, More And More, Less And Less,  Don’t Say A Thing.

Mi piacerebbe provare a mettere in piedi qualcosa. Magari in marzo quando dovrei avere qualche giornata libera.

Il testo in inglese

The second part of our long interview with Mick Harvey is mostly dedicated to Delirium Tremens, the  third volume of Serge Gainsbourg’s songs translated and revisited by the Australian artist.

Delirium Tremens, the album you issued a few months ago, forms a continuum with Intoxicated Man (1995) and Pink Elephants (1997). In these records you do not only translate Serge Gainsbourg’s songs into English but you rearrange and rework them in order to create a new experience.
If I have made variations or personalisations of his music outside of the translations it would simply be a consequence of my own personal taste and style being overlaid on his work. It’s probably inevitable.

Gainsbourg’s language can broke down every barrier. Do you agree?
No, I don’t. In fact I don’t know what you mean. I suspect the majority of people probably don’t like what he does.

Deadly Tedium is cabaret with vibraphone. Tell me about this idea
I just always enjoyed the song and it was a pleasure to work on it and discover its deeper meanings and intricacies. That has always been the best aspect of the process of working through these translations and interpretations.

SS C’est Bon: great translation, clever, high. How’s about the inclusion of this controversial political piece?
Indeed, a difficult one as the bad taste aspect or the borderline politically incorrect part of that song and the whole album it comes from is obviously offset by the fact Serge was a French Jew. I have no such
protective clothing apart from hiding behind the original escape clause of his having written the song.

I Envisage is a song I love very much …
Not much to say, really. The song speaks for itself. It’s dark and mysterious and probably more like something I would approach for my own solo work than just about anything else on these Gainsbourg albums.

The Man With The Cabbage Head has echoes of Mark Lanegan (a musician I know you like)…
I love Mark’s music but I would not have been channeling him – just trying to recreate the original in English. If anything in my voice veered into Mark Lanegan territory it would have been purely accidental.

Coffee Colour is sunny, latin-tinged and with a Mediterranean feel. It’s the song in the album which is closer to the original version…
Hmm, perhaps but certainly not Mediterranean, definitely Caribbean.

The Decadence is high poetry. Are you a poetry reader?
I’m not much of a poetry reader. I wish I were.

Boomerang, A Day Like Any Other, A Violent Poison, More And More, Less And Less, Don’t Say A Thing. These four songs round up one of the best albums of 2016. An adjective to define these songs?
They are all from Anna, the TV special with Anna Karina made in the 60s. I love these songs – some of Serge’s best – and I always loved Anna Karina.

What about the future?
Apart from being on tour with PJ Harvey until sometime in the middle of next year I don’t have many. Not sure what I will do next musically. Maybe I should just try to  make a film!!

Will you do some shows in Italy?

Certainly. I would love to try and arrange something. Maybe next March when there is a small opening.
