Il meglio e il peggio del 2014 secondo la redazione di TomTomRock
Si volesse cercare una direzione, una linea guida per quanto è successo nel 2014 il nostro navigatore rock impazzirebbe. Tanto per cominciare, i tre dischi saliti sul podio non potrebbero essere più diversi l’uno dall’altro: i Metronomy suonano eleganti, malinconici, retro-moderni e molto pacati; Jamie T è uno poeta urbano tagliente e a cuore aperto; St. Vincent propone un pop tecnologico molto cool che veleggia fra avanguardia e mainstream. Rispetto al 2013 di Arcade Fire, Kanye West e David Bowie c’è un po’ meno carisma e molto meno impatto commerciale (a parte St. Vincent, che comunque resta artista di culto). Da notare una cosa: il disco che trionfa nella nostra classifica è stato pesantemente snobbato dalla critica; e anche il ritorno di Jamie T (fra l’altro quasi un ex aequo con i Metronomy, visto che risulta primo in due classifiche su tre della redazione) è stato apprezzato meno di quanto dovuto.
Positivo è certamente il fatto che si tratti di artisti tutti del XXI secolo, per quanto con una buona carriera alle spalle, e che nei Top Ten rientrino due album di esordio (Wytches, Ratking), due opere seconde (Young Fathers e Iceage) e il terzo lavoro di Perfume Genius, che comunque si muove fra i generi con piglio piuttosto giovanilista. Quanto alle vecchie glorie, non si è visto nulla di eclatante come il ritorno di Bowie, ma la rinascita di Marianne Faithfull è commovente (il suo disco migliore degli ultimi vent’anni), mentre l’ottantenne Leonard Cohen stupisce per lucida amarezza. Un ritorno è anche quello di D’Angelo che si è fatto largo proprio alla fine con il capolavoro ‘politico’ del 2014 (nessun’altra lista dei migliori lo prende in considerazione perché è arrivato davvero a bomba quando i giochi sembravano già fatti). A buon diritto veterani possono essere considerati i Tv On The Radio (che non sbagliano mai un disco), così come Mark Kozelek/Sun Kil Moon, prolisso nelle parole (splendide) quanto incalzante e sobrio nella musica; buffo che il suo nome risulti soprattutto legato alla velenosissima instant song dedicata ai War On Drugs (già che si siamo: il loro Lost In The Dream è disco dell’anno per Uncut ed è piaciuto un po’ a tutti, mentre a noi sembra troppo Bruce + Coldplay).
Si riconferma apprezzabile lo stato del rap/hip hop, con ben quattro titoli (inclusi gli scozzesi Young Fathers), tutti più o meno caratterizzati da una deriva tossico-esistenzialista e, nel caso dei Ratking, da un approccio sperimentale poco in sintonia con gli stilemi cafoni del genere nella sua versione videoclip.
Occorre poi notare come molte cose interessanti provengono dalla scena non
anglo-americana: i danesi Iceage (più caviani di Nick Cave), i francesi Détroit) con un live che per fuoco e carisma è il miglior dell’annata, e i russo/ucraino/canadesi Sounds Of Sputnik/Ummagma, atipici nella loro elettronica socialmente connotata. Quanto all’Italia, abbiamo affidato a John Vignola un commento a proposito del 2014 tricolore, che apparirà a breve nella nuova puntata della sua rubrica. Ciò detto, sarebbe interessante poter esplorare che succede, ad esempio, in Slovacchia o Paraguay, ma la vita è una sola.
Un’ultima considerazione: alla faccia della solita litania sulla “morte del rock”, molti dischi presenti nella nostra classifica fanno capo alla chitarra, che del rock è strumento-simbolo: Jamie T, Wytches, Spoon (che fanno il disco migliore a carriera già avanzata), Dan Sartain (stesso discorso), Jack White e Temples (nome di punta di una nuova fioritura psych). Senza dimenticare che St Vincent è talentuosa chitarrista.
Dunque, per il 2014, la voce del nostro tomtom rock ripete all’impazzata “ricalcolo il percorso”, per non parlare di quello che alla fine emerge come unico tratto comune del meglio dell’annata: tutti questi dischi sono fieri di andare STORTI.
