Il 16 settembre 1973, cinque giorni dopo il colpo di stato che aveva deposto il presidente Salvador Allende, nell’Estadio Chile di Santiago veniva assassinato da militari golpisti Victor Jara, una delle figure-simbolo della Nueva Canción Chilena, autore di brani militanti e poetici quali Te recuerdo Amanda, Manifiesto e Canto Libre. Lo ricordiamo con questa nitida e commovente biografia in versi, scritta dal poeta inglese Adrian Mitchell e musicata dal cantautore statunitense Arlo Guthrie. L’11 settembre di quest’anno Bruce Springsteen ha suonato a Santiago del Cile dove ha interpretato proprio Manifiesto in una intensa versione che vi proponiamo a fine articolo.

Lottò per la gente del Cile

Victor Jara era un contadino,
Cominciò a lavorare da piccolo,

E guardava la terra aprirsi
Quando dai vicini c’erano un matrimonio
O moriva un bambino,
Sua mamma cantava tutta la sera per loro
Con Victor sempre accanto
Crebbe per combattere
Le ingiustizie subite dalla gente,
Ascoltava le loro gioie e i loro dolori
E le trasformava in canzoni
Cantò dei minatori nelle miniere di rame
E di chi coltivava la terra,
Cantò dei lavoratori nelle fabbriche
E tutti capirono che stava dalla loro parte
Fece campagna elettorale per Allende
Lavorando notte e giorno,
Cantava: “Prendi per mano tuo fratello,
Il futuro comincia oggi”
Poi i generali presero il potere in Cile
E arrestarono Victor,
Lo chiusero in uno stadio
Con cinquemila persone terrorizzate
Nello stadio Victor si alzò in piedi,
La sua voce era forte era coraggiosa,
Cantò per i compagni di prigionia
Finché le guardie non fermarono la sua canzone
Gli spezzarono le ossa di entrambe le mani,
Lo colpirono sulla testa,
Lo bruciarono con le scosse elettriche,
E poi lo fucilarono
